NOTICE TO VOTERS OF SPECIAL ELECTION
TUESDAY MARCH 7, 2023
Mills County Auditor and Commissioner of Elections, Carol Robertson, hereby gives notice that there will be a SPECIAL ELECTION in the unincorporated parts of Mills County on Tuesday March 7, 2023. Qualified electors of Mills County will vote at the polling places designated below for the purpose voting on a Hotel / Motel Tax public measure.
The Polls will open at 7:00 AM and close at 8:00 PM, as provided by law.
VOTER REGISTRATION INFORMATION: You must be registered to vote to participate in the Special Election. Registration may be done in the following ways.
- You may register in person in the Auditor’s Office. The deadline is 5:00 PM, Monday February 20, 2023.
- You may mail in your registration to the Auditor’s Office. Voter registrations that are mailed must be received by or have been postmarked by Monday February 20, 2023.
- Election Day Registration: You may register at your polling place on Election Day by presenting a current photo ID and proof of residency to the election officials. Contact the Auditor’s Office for a list of approved documents.
VOTER INFORMATION: Voters are required to provide an approved form of photo ID at the polling place before receiving and casting a ballot. A voter who is unable to provide an approved form of ID (or prove residence if required) may:
- Have the voter’s identity/residence attested to by another registered voter in the precinct. Attesters must provide an approved form of photo ID in order to attest for the voter.
- Cast a provisional ballot and provide a photo ID / proof of residency at the Auditor’s Office by 11:00 AM Thursday March 9, 2023.

ABSENTEE VOTING BY MAIL: A ballot may be mailed to you upon your request. Request can be made in writing (you must include your name, ID #, address, date of birth, name and date of the election, voter signature, and signature date) or on an official Absentee Ballot Request form. Official forms may be obtained by contacting the Auditor’s office or on our website at https://www.millscountyiowa.gov/ . Absentee Ballot requests must be received by the Auditor’s Office no later than 5:00 PM on Monday February 20, 2023.
Absentee ballots must be returned to the Auditor’s office no later than 8:00 PM on Tuesday March 7, 2023. Postmark dates DO NOT count. Absentee ballots CANNOT be placed in the drop box outside the Courthouse.

ABSENTEE VOTING IN PERSON: Absentee ballots will be available starting Wednesday February 15, 2023, at the Mills County Auditor’s Office and may be voted in the office until 4:30 PM on Monday March 6, 2023.
PUBLIC TEST OF VOTING EQUIPMENT: the Unisyn Optical Scan voting system and ballot marking devices which will be use in the Special Election will be tested starting at 10:00 AM on Thursday, February 23, 2023. The public test will be conducted at the Mills County Annex, in the basement.
DESIGNATION OF POLLING PLACES: Please note the changes in polling places below for the Special Election. The locations below are not the same for all voters as the locations used in the previous 2022 General Election, as we are consolidating precincts into a few polling locations.

Polling places are handicap accessible. Any voter who is physically unable to enter the polling place has the right to vote in the voter’s vehicle. For further information, please contact the County Auditor’s Office.

EXTENDED OFFICE HOURS: In addition to the normal business hours of 8:00 AM – 4:30 PM, Monday – Friday, the Mills County Auditor’s Office will have extended hours on the following days:
- Monday, February 20 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
- Friday, March 3 from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM
